It is the year 3603 BBY. The Sith Empire has just soundly defeated the Republic in an 18 year long war. Many systems were captured and the Sith are at a high point in their history. Near the end, though, the Dark Lord of the Sith offered peace to the republic. Eagerly accepting his offer, the Republic forces withdrew and left Coruscant open for attack. Coruscant was seized during the peace proceedings, which caused the Republic to be much more open to the Sith's terms. The treaty resolved favorably, with the Sith gaining much of the Republic's possesions, and the Republic required to tell the Sith whenever the enter airspace above a planet. The Sith also have placed several protocal droids in position to shadow prominent Republic leaders to ensure that they obey the terms of the treaty. For the past 50 years, the Republic has been trying to rebuild its resources to try to build a military large enough to withstand the Sith. There have been no major conflicts between the Sith and Republic up until now, but there have been numerous border skirmishes. The Republic has recovered enough to hold their own against small Sith attacks, though they still are not even close to being a threat to the Sith. After the war, the Emperor left the governing of the Sith Empire to the Dark Council and retreated to the shadows. This has encouraged infighting among the Sith, and the Empire is not completely stable. Things are starting to settle down in the Sith Empire, though the leaders still distrust each other. Also, their alliance with the Mandalorians has disintegrated. They are currently very sensitive to any and all outsiders that enter their territory.
