*NOTE*-This is NOT complete. Please feel free to add to it! I don't know a ton about the Mandalorians.
The Mandalorians historically were a warlike people, and feared across the galaxy. They loved war for the sake of war, and would test themselves against stronger and stronger enemies. Would-be-empires often called for their assistance; their prowess in battle was legendary. Most recently, their were instrumental in the Sith victory over the Republic. However, relationships have broken down between the Sith and the Mandalorians, and they are on their own again.

((This is what I know of the situation given the time proximity))
The Mandalorians have had a long standing tradition of being ruled by a man known as Mandalore (or Mand'alor in Mando'a). He is selected amongst the Mando'ade based on his prowess as a warrior. The Mandalore is seen more than just as a commander, but as a symbol of the strength of the Mandalorians. The Mandalore would never sit aboard a ship allowing his soldiers to fight the battle for him, in fact it is tradition that Mandalore be the first soldier to enter the battle.
Mandalore the Ultimate was the leader during the Mandalorian wars, and the last Mandalore to serve before the Mandalorian Diaspora. Following his defeat at the hands of Revan, the Jedi order (Revan specifically) removed the mask of Mandalore which was the traditional symbol passed amongst the Mandalore. Without the idol, It would be difficult for a "Mandalore" to take upon him the entire mantle of the position for not all of the tribes would recognize him as they had Mandalore's in the past.
This tradition broke when Mandalore the Preserver (Canderous Ordo) became the Mandalore and attempted to unite the Mandalorian tribes once again. Though his efforts were eventually in vain, he did establish a precedent that a Man could rise and take the title of Mandalore without the symbolic mask.
Since Mandalore the Preserver, none have come close to becoming a true Mandalore like unto those of the past. However, the Mandalorian people, having given up their loyalties to the Sith, are growing restless and desire to unite underneath a leader who will lead them into the glory of battle once again.
